Islam does not support monasticism. True believers can never go around with the guilt of unemployment on their heads. Because in the Qur'an-Hadith, besides worship, special importance has been given to earning a living. The prophets and messengers sent by Allah have also taken up different professions to earn a living. Today we will know what were the occupations in Arabia in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him).
Business: One of the occupations of the Quraish was trade. They had a reputation in the business world all over Arabia. The Prophet (peace be upon him) did business himself. He encouraged the ummah to trade in halal ways. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘Truthful and faithful traders will be with the Prophets, the martyrs and the righteous in the Hereafter.’ (Tirmidhi, Hadith: 1209)
Teaching: The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was a teacher. Who has shown the way of light to the whole world. He said, "I have been sent as a teacher." (Ibn Majah, Hadith: 229)
Hunting: In the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) some people in Arabia used to make a living by hunting. Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib was known as a skilled hunter in Arabia at that time. It is forbidden to hunt in the state of Ihram. Therefore, by revealing verses in the Holy Qur'an, people of this profession have been instructed to refrain from hunting in the state of Ihram. Irshad said, ‘O you who believe, Allah will surely test you with the prey which reaches your hands and spears, to know who fears Allah from the unseen. Therefore, if anyone transgresses the limits after that, there is a painful punishment for him. (Surah: Maida, verse: 94)
Collecting wood: In the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) some people used to make a living by cutting wood. He himself has encouraged people to take up this profession. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, ‘By the One in whose hand is my life! Better a poor horse than no horse at all. Better a poor horse than no horse at all. '(Bukhari, Hadith: 1460)
Animal Husbandry: The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was associated with this profession. Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Allah did not send any prophet who did not graze goats. Then the disciples said, you too? He said yes; I used to graze the goats of the Makkans for a few qiraats (coins). (Bukhari, Hadith: 2272)
Farming: Farming is one of the oldest occupations of human civilization. This profession has survived for ages in need of life. This profession has also been encouraged in Islam. Through the Holy Qur'an, Allah has given guidance to the people of this profession. Irshad said, ‘And He is the One who has created gardens of which some are scaffold-dependent and others are not scaffold-dependent, and date palms and grains, which have different tastes, and olives and pomegranates, are like one another, but also in different forms. When it bears fruit, it will eat its fruit, and on the day of harvest it will give them its due. And do not waste; Surely He does not love the extravagant. (Surah An-Nam, Ayat: 141)
Arms production: Just as food grain production is essential for the prosperity of a country, it is also necessary to acquire military power for the security of the country. In the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) the Arabs were also very skilled in arms production.
Spinning: The Arabs were behind all other countries in the textile industry. Most of the industries known for textile weaving, tanning, etc., were located in neighboring Yemen. Syria and Diamond or Iraq. Throughout Arabia, women worked as spinners. (R Rahikul Makhtum, Page: 71)
